In 2016, AEMI closed a $6,300,000 NMTC transaction to help Sheltering Arms construct an early education and family center on the campus of Atlanta Public Schools’ D.H. Stanton Elementary. Sheltering Arms provides quality affordable early childhood education and comprehensive family support services, promoting self-sufficiency and upward mobility for low-income families. Located in Atlanta’s Peoplestown neighborhood, Sheltering Arms meets a critical need in communities where the ability to obtain safe, consistent childcare is one of the biggest barriers to employment. The innovative 26,000-square foot building also will incorporate energy efficiency and sustainable design technologies that will help teach community-based sustainable practices. The new facility will support year-round services to neighborhood children and families as well as community outreach efforts and professional development for educators.
